The four quarters of the Old City of Jerusalem
The four quarters of Jerusalem offer a unique experience of a diversity of cultures, religions, archetecture and scents that take you through time and geography within several hours of walking in a city that is one square kilometer in area.
Jaffa Gate
We start the tour at Jaffa Gate, one of seven gates in the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. The walls and the gates that we currently see werebuilt in the first half of the 16th century by the Ottoman (Turkish) Sultan, Suliman the Great or Suliman the Magnificent. It is a typical middle ages architecture, though with great emphasis on beauty.
The Armenian quarter
We will first visit the Armenian quarter, which aside from various issues, raises the question – why is there an Armenian quarter in Jerusalem? We will visti some of the Armenian art shops on our way to Saint James Cathedral, one of the olderst churches in Jerusalem.
The Jewish quarter
Surprisingly and contrary to expectations, the Jewish quarter is the newest built in Jerusalem. Actually it was rebuilt after being entirely destroyed in 1948. Yet, alongside the new buildings we will visit the Cardo, the main road of the Roman city of Jerualem and a section of the wall built by King Hezekiah 2700 years ago.
